Indian corn (flint corn) activities and crafts for preschoolers

Flint corn (also known as Indian corn) has a rich autumnal history. Indian corn has multi-colored kernels which are starchy when cooked, and not as sweet as the corn we are used to eating. Today, flint corn kernels are ground into flour, used in dishes like hominy, ground into cornmeal for humans and animals, and used for popping. In early American History, the Pilgrims would not have survived had the Native Americans not taught them how to grow corn as it could be stored for food throughout the hard winters. Share a bit of the history of Indian corn and learn through play with some fun Indian corn activities and crafts designed just for your own preschoolers.

Indian Corn Craft for Kids
  • Download and print the Indian corn template above – one per student or child.
  • Preschoolers can cut the colored squares from the template, and then cut smaller square shapes from each of the 3 colors – red, gold, and orange (for younger kids, the smaller squares can be cut prior to the activity).
  • Cut the green corn husks from the template and set aside.
  • Draw a large oval on the brown or white construction paper and cut the shape out (one oval for each child or student). It doesn’t have to be a perfect oval. Kids can draw their own and cut out, if desired.
  • Preschoolers should cover the construction paper oval with glue, and then press various colored squares onto the corn.
  • Glue the green leaves (husks) to the sides of the corn to complete the Indian Corn Paper Mosaics.
